Ten NFT Projects and Collectives Disrupting Social Impact

2021 has been a year of incredible growth for NFTs, culminating on Tuesday December 7th with the first ever #NFTuesday, an initiative aimed at raising funds for a variety of charitable causes.

One of the more exciting developments in the NFT space, has been the purposeful social impact projects that have arisen. These projects have helped bring awareness and funding to many important social causes and have been another great example of the power of crypto and blockchain in contributing to social good.

For this blog post, we will be highlighting ten amazing projects, collectives, and organizations disrupting the social impact sector. These ten projects demonstrate some of the many inspiring use cases of NFTs in the social impact space.

1. Blazed Cats

Blazed Cats offers a series of Cat NFTs with a variety of customizations to make each one verifiably unique. 25% of mint profits go to Mental Health America, and each time a Blazed Cat is bought or sold, 100% of the secondary royalties, or 10% of the sale, goes to Mental Health America as well, which to date has amounted to over $300,000. Their royalty model allows for Mental Health America to generate recurring revenue for each secondary sale of the NFTs.

2. Women Rise NFT

Women Rise NFT is an NFT collection consisting of 10,000 unique art pieces representing a diversity of women from across the world. The project recognizes the amazing women activists, artists, scientists, and coders all over the world making the world a better place, while helping make the NFT space more inclusive and diverse. All pieces are created by Maliha Abidi, and artists and advocate for women’s rights, gender equality, and girl’s education.

3. ARTXV

ARTXV is a community of artists, allies, and collectors, promoting diversity in the NFT space by empowering neurodiverse artists. ARTXV shines a light on the amazing works of neurodiverse artists, raises awareness of neurodiversity, and helps neurodiverse artists achieve economic independence. ARTXV recently announced its partnership with Google Arts & Culture, the first of its kind for an NFT collective!

4. ChangeDAO

ChangeDAO believes that NTFs can be a driving force for social impact. They are a “decentralized application built on the ethereum blockchain and a global grassroots community aimed at leveraging social change art and NFTs as a force for change.” They have created the “Triple P NFT” model, in which every digital asset benefits multiple stakeholders: people, planet, profit. Each ChangeDAO NFT supports a worthy cause, and they are working hard to minimize energy consumption, and purchase carbon offsets to cover the energy used in the minting of their NFTs.

5. Impact

Impact is a new collective looking to use NFTs for social impact, and has the simple mission to “make philanthropy an integral part of Web3.”  They accomplish this by assisting charities with accepting cryptocurrency donations, while creating commemorative NFTs that are provided to donors to acknowledge their crypto donations. 95% of all funds raised by Impact go to charity, and Impact recently launched its first partnership with Keep A Breast Foundation, an amazing organization that supports BIPOC breast cancer survivors. Their Keep A Breast “Give Back Grants” provides $500 grants to survivors, which are funded through the sale of their “I love boobies!” NFTs.

6. Fast Food Punks

Fast Food Punks is a collection of 1,000 hand drawn, fast-food inspired NFT punks. Charitable giving is core to Fast Food Punks, and they recently held an auction for an honorary set of 26 Fast Food Punks, in which over $574,000 was raised for the Ronald McDonald House Charity, helping provide an estimated 6,000-night stays for families in need.

7. KRebels

Krebels is a collection of 9,999 Koala-inspired NFTs with the goal of helping raise awareness and funds for the preservation of the Koala species. KRebels has pledged a percentage from the sale of each of their NFTs to support charities helping save Koala’s from extinction.

8. Women and Weapons

Women and Weapons is a collection of 10,000 diverse women NFTs, with hundreds of attributes which make each verifiably unique. 5% of all proceeds raised through the project support The Malala Fund, an organization that supports equitable access to education for women around the world.

9. Moon Landing

Moon Landing supports neurodiverse artists and collaborations in the NFT space, by producing NFT projects in collaboration with non-profits working at the intersection of art and disabilities. They advocate for neurodiverse artists, help support them in the production of works, and help foster dialogue between artists and the broader NFT community.

10. Sothebys Metaverse

Okay, so this isn’t really an NFT project or collective, and is a massive art and luxury auction house, which is the farthest thing from an NFT collective, but Sotheby’s has done some interesting work at the intersection of NFTs and social impact in recent weeks that is worth highlighting. Recently, they announced the auction of 140 NFTs to raise funds for Sostento, an organization supporting frontline healthcare workers, and have other social impact auction plans for the future.
