15 Pioneering Web3 Projects Revolutionizing Space Exploration, Discovery, and Education

A decentralized network in space, with a space station, shuttles, and astronauts.

As we enter a new era of space exploration, a synergistic relationship between frontier technologies is emerging. Just as the rockets of today are more advanced than those that took humanity to the moon, the digital tools and technologies supporting these missions have evolved too.

One of the frontier technologies that stands to revolutionize space exploration is Web3, the next iteration of the internet, built on decentralized blockchain technologies. Web3 is proving to be a transformative force in various sectors, and space exploration is no exception. From democratizing access to satellite data, to crowdfunding space exploration missions, to creating decentralized space colonies, the Decentralized Space (DeSpace) movement is at the forefront of many groundbreaking initiatives.

In this article, we'll venture into the cosmos, spotlighting 15 visionary projects that harness the power of Web3 for space exploration, discovery, and education. Prepare for liftoff as we dive into a future where blockchain meets the stars.

1. MoonDAO

MoonDAO is on a mission “to create a self-sustaining, self-governing settlement on the Moon by 2030 to act as a launch point for humanity to explore the cosmos.” To date, they have made some exciting progress including the launch of the $MOONEY governance token, the building of a strong community of 12,000 token holders, and even sent the first DAO-voted person to space! For the next phase of their roadmap, they are providing funding to space research and exploration initiatives, and have the ultimate goal of putting a “MoonDAO colony” on the Moon.

2. LunCo

Lunco has a mission “to accelerate Lunar colonisation, providing open-source engineering software to benefit humanity.” By creating open-source software to benefit space exploration, the hope is that it will lower the cost of space missions, speed up space exploration by enabling knowledge sharing, and facilitating decentralized space missions.

3. Deep Venture

Deep Venture is on a mission to “provide Space scientists worldwide with cutting-edge tooling to do their research more independently.” They are hoping to achieve this by creating a platform to help facilitate the sharing of ideas and building of networks amongst space researchers and enthusiasts.

4. Copernic Space

Copernic Space has created a “marketplace for tokenized space assets and ventures.” Through their SpaceMart, individuals are able to purchase unique space assets, such as the opportunity to co-participate in an actual rocket launch. They’ve also launched a series of Space Passport NFTs that open the door to IRL space experiences and benefits on the Space Marketplace, as well as a DeFi platform to help finance space opportunities.

5. Spacerox DAO

Spacerox is “building a platform for funding, developing, and governing the next generation of sustainable space-sector startups.” They aim to serve as a decentralized space think tank and accelerator, and act as a “bridge between the Aerospace Community and the Web3 world.” Their first project, “SatHawk”, is a satellite tracking app “designed to enable the assessment of satellite operations in accordance with our space sustainability standards.”

6. Cosmos for Humanity

Cosmos for Humanity is an NGO that “aims to raise awareness among the general public and economic actors about the sustainable development of space activities, while supporting innovative projects that address the issue of space pollution.” By supporting the management of space pollution, it will help preserve humanities’ satellite capabilities, which play an essential role in the health of the planet through the monitoring of climate change factors.

7. Space DAO

Space DAO is on a mission to build “a neutral, independent and collaborative consensus mechanisms for important space data.” Supported by the European Space Agency, they hope to bring together diverse stakeholders including data providers, regulators, and space policy makers, with the goal of establishing consensus mechanisms to address important challenges in space, such as space traffic and in-orbit disaster detection and response.

8. Alpha Persei

Alpha Persei is on a mission to democratize access to space, and is “the First Decentralised Funding and Governance structure leveraging Blockchain Technology to foster the Space ecosystem through the tokenization and decentralization of Real-World Space Assets.” They aim to accomplish this by tokenizing space assets and making them available to the public through regulated investment vehicles.

9. Frontier DAO

Frontier DAO is an “Open Science accelerator for innovative, catalytic R&D in space exploration, clean energy, and climate solutions.” They offer a series of workshops and educational cohorts on DeSci and Open Science, are creating an on-chain registry for IP rights, and are helping raise funds for important STEM research.

10. AstroChain

Astrochain “encourages and develops space exploration for the retail enthusiast, bringing people together with a common astronomy passion into one unique platform.” Their first application, “The Astrofeed” is a social feed for enthusiasts to share content related to astronomy, which is then minted on-chain as an NFT, and shared amongst their community. They are also creating a sky scanning device called the “AstroHUB” which allows space enthusiasts to capture and share space anomaly images and data.

11. Axiom Space3

Axiom Space3 is an initiative of Axiom Space, which is “the leading provider of human spaceflight services and developer of human-rated space infrastructure.” Axiom Space 3 has released a series of NFTs for space enthusiasts that weave in features from actual space missions, such as an astronauts personal mission patch, and photographs taken from the International Space Station!

12. Terraformers Space Adventures

Terraformers Space Adventures is building an NFT-membership space adventure club that grants members access to a unique app that includes interactive space content and experiences. This includes working with real space companies to provide members with “Space Redeemables” which include in-person events, content, and digital collectibles.

13. Paramerty.AI

Founded by former European Space Agency engineers and researchers, Parametry.AI is “building a neutral and transparent space traffic negotiation ecosystem. They believe in a “collaborative, sustainable and safe Earth Orbit,” and are using blockchain to support space mission design, space traffic management, and disaster and emergency response in space.

14. SpaceChain

SpaceChain is on a mission to “make space accessible and secure for all, fostering innovation, collaboration, and exploration beyond boundaries.” They accomplish this through “the integration of space and fintech technologies, leveraging satellite platforms, and bringing security and accessibility to the space and fintech industry.” Their solutions include space mission design and management, a digital banking terminal that “enables secure transactions using cutting-edge space technology,” and more.

15. DeSpace QF

DeSpace QF aims to “push humanity to the final frontier through public goods in Space via quadratic funding.” They are in the process of launching a Decentralized Space Exploration Quadratic Funding round, leveraging Gitcoin’s GrantStack technology, that provides funding and support for projects in the Decentralized Space Exploration ecosystem.
