INFOGRAPHIC: An introduction to Gitcoin Grants

A Brief Intro to Gitcoin Grants

What it is, why you should get involved, and how to make the most of your Gitcoin experience!

1 - What is Gitcoin Grants?

Gitcoin Grants is a quarterly funding program helping early-stage builders raise funds for public goods projects through crowdfunding and matching funds.

Quadratic Funding

Quadratic Funding is a matching funds mechanism that places a greater value on the total number of unique individuals supporting a project, rather than the total funding the project receives. In a QF round, individuals "vote" for their favorite projects by making donations to them, signaling to the QF algorithm which projects they feel should receive the most matching funds.

In essence, more widespread community support = more matching funds.

Gitcoin Grants’ Impact

  • $50M+ raised for early-stage public goods projects

  • 3,700+ projects supported through the grants program

  • 3.8M unique donations made by community members

  • 270K unique supporters of Gitcoin grants projects

2 - Getting Involved as a Grantee

Getting involved as a grantee is easy, and is a great way for your project to:

  • Raise funds to help get your project off the ground

  • Build a dedicated community of supporters & contributors

  • Raise awareness of the issue your project addresses

  • Build valuable partnerships to grow your impact

3 - Getting involved as a Community Member

Don’t have a project that needs funding? No worries! There are so many incredible ways you can participate as a community member!

  • Learn - about new public goods projects having real world impact

  • Vote - for the projects you think deserve the most matching funds by making a small donation

  • Amplify - incredible projects by helping spread the word within your network

  • Participate - in Twitter/X spaces as a great way to connect with the community

  • Onboard - new folks to the Gitcoin grants community, helping ensure diverse representation in the voting process

4 - But wait...what’s a Gitcoin Passport, and do i need one to participate?

The Gitcoin Passport is a tool that helps ensure fairness in the Quadratic Funding process by protecting against “sybils” - fake users amplifying support for specific projects with the goal of receiving more matching funds. For a donation to be eligible for matching funds, the passport holder must have a score of 20 or higher. Holders can increase their score by adding “stamps” to their passport to validate their identity and online reputation.
