Crypto Charity Profile: Virunga National Park

In this blog series, we highlight charities doing great work around the world that accept cryptocurrency donations. For this post, I am thrilled to highlight the amazing work being done by Virunga National Park. This organization has a special place in my heart as I had the pleasure of visiting Virunga a few years back, and saw in action the amazing work they are doing.

Virunga National Park’s Mission

Virunga National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, “is Africa’s most biodiverse protected area, home to over one thousand species of mammal, bird, reptile, and amphibian as well as 1/3 of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas.” The park protects and preserves wildlife and biodiversity, and helps promote a green economy in the region.

In 2013, the Park launched the Virunga Alliance with the goal of not only protecting the national park, but also the millions of people that live near the park’s borders. The region has faced a number of complex challenges including a volatile security situation, high levels of poverty, and rampant natural resource trafficking. The Virunga Alliance has been an essential force in combating these issues, and “fostering peace and prosperity through the responsible economic development of natural resources.”

Impacts

The Virunga National Park has not only had an amazing impact on the biodiversity of the region, but also on the economy and health of local communities. With over 5 million people within a day’s walk of the park, and high levels of extreme poverty in the area, the park is also an essential generator of economic and social activity. Some of the extraordinary impacts include:

• Actively conserving 3000 square miles

• Improving water accessibility for 900,000 people

• Conserving and protecting 44 endangered species

• Supplying electricity to 70% of Goma, a nearby city
