OutRight’s Mission
Since 1990, OutRight Action International has been fighting for human rights for LGBTIQ people all over the world. This work is of vital importance, as human rights are not a guarantee for LGBTIQ people depending on where they live. In fact, LGBTIQ people around the world still face many terrible realities including but not limited to:
67 countries still criminalize same sex relations between consenting adults, 11 of which have laws imposing the death penalty
Less than have of the UN member states ban discrimination based on sexual orientation
13 countries have laws criminalizing transgender people
30 countries don’t have an organization to advocate for LGBTIQ rights
To fight for LGBTIQ human rights, OutRight has three strategic program areas:
Advocacy - OutRight is the only LGBTIQ organization with a permanent presence at the United Nations, where they advocate for human rights and act as a watchdog for all 193 governments.
Movement Resourcing - OutRight provides support and resources to grassroots movements all over the world fighting for LGBTIQ human rights.
Research - OutRight conducts research into the threats facing LGBTIQ communities, and have published hundreds of reports.
To ensure their work is having the best possible impact, they focus their work in four key regions: Asia and the Pacific Islands, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Impacts
Since their foundation in 1990, OutRight Action International has had positive impacts that have advanced the human rights of LGBTIQ people around the world. This includes:
Being at the forefront of many important international LGBTIQ human rights legal cases
Incubating and launching dozens of LGBTIQ organizations around the world
Distributing thousands of dollars to support LGBTIQ communities in times of emergency
Producing hundreds of important reports and briefing papers
