Coral Restoration Foundation’s Mission
The Coral Restoration Foundation is “The biggest coral reef restoration effort on the planet,” and is “actively restoring coral reefs on a massive scale, educating others on the importance of our oceans, and using science to further coral research and coral reef monitoring techniques.”
To achieve this mission, the Coral Restoration Foundation has three core programs:
Restoration – they conduct restoration efforts to help restore coral reefs at a massive scale. This involves the innovative approach of growing corals in nurseries offshore, and then rehoming them to sites within the Ocean.
Science – they conduct research and collect data to inform their strategic development.
Education – they engage in education and community engagement opportunities to empower the community around their mission. This includes recreational dive programs, an exploration centre, and the development of educational materials.
Impacts
Through the work highlighted above, the Coral Restoration Foundation has achieved tremendous impacts including:
Returning more than 130,000 critically endangered corals back to Florida’s Coral Reef since 2007, many of which have grown into thriving colonies.
Working with 415 coral genotypes across 11 species, ensuring genetic diversity and resilience.
Collaborating with universities, aquariums, NGOs, and government agencies to conduct research and deliver their mission.
Providing internships to students to inspire the next generation of restoration enthusiasts
